Period Promise Launches This March
This March, the Kingston District Labour Council is proud to support Period Promise, a national initiative addressing period poverty and advancing menstrual equity in our communities.
The labour movement’s work in this area began in 2009 with “Tampon Tuesday,” launched by union activist Mandi Fields after she discovered empty shelves in a local food bank’s hygiene cupboard. With support from community leaders and partners across the country — including the Canadian Labour Congress and local labour councils — the initiative grew into a powerful example of solidarity in action.
Today, that work continues under Period Promise, originally launched by United Way British Columbia and now expanded nationally. Here in KFL&A, we are proud to partner with the United Way of Kingston, Frontenac, Lennox & Addington to collect menstrual hygiene products and financial donations throughout the month of March.
Access to menstrual products is a matter of health, dignity, and equity. No one should have to choose between purchasing basic necessities and managing their period.
How to Get Involved:
- Host a workplace or union hall collection (pads, tampons, liners & other products)
- Contact us to volunteer or make a financial donation
- Learn more about Period Promise locally: https://www.unitedwaykfla.ca/your-impact/community-initiatives/period-promise/
Together, we can ensure that solidarity shows up in practical ways for those who need it most.
In solidarity,
Kingston District Labour Council
