City of Kingston Proclaims April 28th as “National Day of Mourning”

At it’s April 8th council meeting, the City of Kingston granted KDLC’s request to have April 28th proclaimed “National Day of Mourning” in Kingston. We encourage everyone to pause on this day to reflect on and remember those workers who have been lost, injured, or made ill at the workplace.

Period Promise Launches This March

This March, the Kingston District Labour Council is proud to support Period Promise, a national initiative addressing period poverty and advancing menstrual equity in our communities. The labour movement’s work in this area began in 2009 with “Tampon Tuesday,” launched by union activist Mandi Fields after she discovered empty shelves in a local food bank’s hygiene cupboard. With support from community leaders and partners across the country — including the Canadian Labour Congress and local labour councils — the initiative grew into a powerful example of solidarity in action. Honouring the Victims of December 6, 1989 December 6 marks the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women in Canada — a solemn day that traces its origins to the tragic events at Montréal’s École Polytechnique in 1989. On that day, 14 women were murdered in an act of gender-based violence that shocked the country and exposed the urgent need for change. Today, the Kingston District Labour Council joins communities across Canada in remembering the women whose lives were taken and in supporting all survivors of gender-based violence.
